The years in the house proved to be fruitful ones for both La Retama Library and the members of La Retama Club.  During this time, library patrons enjoyed new services including a traveling library van.  Also, two La Retama Club members, Catherine Terry and Gazzie Warren served on the library board since before 1950 and began devoting their efforts toward securing a fireproof structure for the library.  The Jones house was beautiful with a wooden staircase and lush lawn, but it was not designed as a library building and had its setbacks.  Finally, the City of Corpus Christi passed a bond issue for a modern fireproof structure.  The bond provided $300,000 for the remodeling of the old city hall on Mesquite Street.  La Retama members later wrote, “Catherine Terry and Gazzie Warren worked personally with the architects and with Librarian, Phyllis Burson, for the selection of all furnishings and fabrics.”
